API replies only allowed when the author “summons” you

What changed

To reduce automated low-quality replies, X now allows programmatic replies via POST /2/tweets only when the original Post’s author has summoned the replier by @mentioning that account or quoting one of its posts. Further limits apply to programmatic @mentions and quotes. Enterprise access is not affected.

Why it matters for creators

Reply-automation and “reply guy” tools that run on self-serve API access can’t reply to strangers through the API anymore. Treat any tool that promises this with caution.
